| Anastasia Shin graduated from Goldsmiths Art Practice course in 2011. Her regular travel to Asia since 2008 has been a great source of inspiration for both her use of imagery and the ideas of import and export; in relation to real, and also‘virtual’ geographies. ‘The virtual’, according to the philosopher Pierre Levy describes something which is in the ‘process of becoming’. Neither fixed, nor concluded in form a ‘virtual object’ takes its point of reference from the experience of a real object, yet exists in an unreachable realm often described as ‘unreal’. Shin sees these realities as necessarily intwined in contemporary culture, and likens this virtual space to the space of imagination, where illusion roams and materiality fluctuates. When working with painting, 3d modelling, print or video projection– all works maintain a sculptural and material focus. Using the realm of painting to realise otherwise non-existent sculptures and assemblages, Shin communicates works of layered meaning that implicate the space of the viewer. |
