| Paul’s work combines drawing, painting and photography in an exploration of what might constitute the space of contemporary landscape. This space has been both constructed through the powers of fiction, which romanticize and imagine beyond reality, and through real spaces that are lived in, worked and used. His work is constructed, manipulated and edited to reflect the mediated and idealized surfaces that frame the ‘natural’. He records the landscape through observation and photographic documentation and attempts to reconcile this with the actual experience of being in the landscape. His most recent work has involved seeking out specific ‘sights’ in the landscape, notably ‘Ancient Trees’ and ‘Exposed Roots’. These locations are subject to the forces of technological mediation and are tempered by those of subjective experience. The work attempts to further understand this relationship by engaging with a curious sense of ‘failed vision’ or ‘obscured seeing’ experienced at the point where these two forces meet and which hi-lights our inability to fully comprehend our surroundings. |
