Oil on board 50 x 40 cm 2011
Jayne Anita Smith paints futuristic scenes of petrified marginal spaces situated between consciousness and dream, which refer to mankind’s futile search for utopian ideals. Smith responds to the pressures on contemporary life such as climate change, exploding population and mass shortages of planet resources. Within these suggestively apocalyptic scenarios, Smith’s subjects are displaced and minute; conveying stillness, alienation, and waiting. Narratives highlight the growing relationship between people and video games, being used as an attempt to escape reality and create an alternate identity through virtual means.
