toshie takeuchi: biography
Toshie Takeuchi was born in Japan in 1977. At the age of 20 she became interested in photography. She graduated from the London College of Communication (former London College of Printing) in 2004 with a degree in photography. The artist now lives and practices in Japan, exhibiting internationally.
Takeuchi has been working on her project "planet of Rabbits" since 2004; this large-scale panoramic digital montage project addresses social and existential issues. It represents a fantasy world played by children dressing up like bunnies. They appear in everyday landscapes, such as parks and schools, which are transformed into mysterious spaces. These places are daily views for children but not for adults. In other words, these places do not mean the same for us, as for children.
Toshie Takeuchi deconstructs the complex psychological tensions of children and their feelings that they cannot explain. She also reviews her own childhood memories using many kinds of references. Analyzing those elements of deconstructed children's mentality, and Takeuchi then re-constructs the elements in the creation of surreal "scapes", in order to distribute "alarms" to the world. She metaphorically represents children's frustration, confusion and psychological void that often appear in the poor communication with adults, particularly with their parents. As this "planet of Rabbits" series is created for adult viewers, the "rabbit" has one more important role. They act as a tool to draw strong attention to adult viewer's to the children and allow them to "time travel" to their imaginative world, which could be their own childhood.
Takeuchi’s work has been exhibited internationally. In 2002 the artist was included in the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award in 2002. Since then the artist has shown at the Fotografie Forum International, Frankfurt, Germany, the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film and her first international solo exhibition at Galleri Image, Aarhus, Denmark. Takeuchi has her first UK based solo exhibition at BEARSPACE in 2008.
